“We see our 30e anniversary as an opportunity to revisit what we have learned as a company and rededicate ourselves to moving our organization forward for the next 30 years,” said the CEO of XL Richard Walker. “XL Construction’s main differentiator has always been our people and they were the focus of our Vision Launch event.”
Despite COVID-19, an event that has been in the works for five years
The current vision of XL Construction was conceived during the 25e anniversary. At the time, the company’s management decided that it needed more than a philosophical benchmark, but a strategic business tool that would help the company gain momentum and guide it through long-term planning and daily decisions.
“Five years ago, after almost a year of thinking through these questions and gathering feedback from across the organization and from our most trusted customers and partners, we gained real clarity on become a sustainable business that makes a difference,” Walker said. “We wanted to build on our success and reputation as an exceptional partner to deliver challenging projects that support our goal of improving the lives of our customers and our community, while expanding opportunities for our employees.”
Laying the foundations for the future
A key step in preparing for the 30e the anniversary initiative was the creation of XL Construction’s organizational development group in November 2021. Led by a company veteran and Senior Vice President Alan Laurlundthe group is responsible for fostering a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) roadmap that better reflects the communities in which the company operates, as well as developing an integrated approach to talent management to help employees to reach their full career potential.
Walker believes that companies in the construction industry too often fall into the trap of placing too much emphasis on the technical skills of employees at the expense of developing essential management and leadership skills. Its philosophy is to invest in training individuals to perform optimally in their next role, which will further increase the success of its employees and projects.
Early 2022, as part of a planned managerial transition, co-founder and long-term CEO Eric Raff resigned and became executive chairman while former chairman Walker was elevated to CEO.
The company also opened the doors of a new office in Oakland. Although its opening has been delayed due to COVID-19, the new facility serves as a hub in the East Bay, which, in addition to its offices in Milpita and Sacramentoensure a local presence in a key market for the company.
Over the past 10 years, the company has also been recognized with more than 70 industrial projects and Best Places to Work awards, as well as being awarded as ENR entrepreneur of the year in 2020.
