The ICON 2021 index has been released, offering a detailed list of the world’s largest construction companies based on 2020 sales figures in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the report, the top 200 construction companies in the world reported sales of $ 1,746 billion, a marginal improvement from sales of $ 1,744 billion in 2019.

Here are the 10 biggest construction companies.

1. CSCEC | China

China State Construction & Engineering Co. maintained its position as the world’s largest construction company with revenue of $ 220.3 billion in 2020, up from $ 203.1 billion in 2019.

The company’s impressive profits – amid the Covid-19 pandemic – have been attributed to China’s focus on public infrastructure as well as the Belt and Road initiative.

Notable projects: Based in Beijing, China, CSCEC has worked on numerous construction projects in many parts of the world, including Daxing International Airport, the Great Mosque of Algiers and the proposed new capital of Egypt.

2. Chinese railway group | China

The China Railway Group is second in the ICON 2021 list of the world’s largest construction companies with revenue of $ 141.2 billion in 2020, up from $ 124.3 billion in 2019.

Notable projects: Based in Beijing, China, China Railway Group is involved in many large-scale infrastructure projects overseas, especially in Southeast Asia and Africa.

3. China Railway Construction Corp. | China

10. Hochtief | Germany

German construction company Hochtief is closing the list of the world’s 10 largest construction companies – as it did last year – despite falling sales to $ 26.2 billion in 2020.

Notable projects: Based in Essen, Germany, Hochtief undertook the expansion of King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The company is currently working on the Chao Canal Bridge – connecting the island of Chiloé to mainland Chile, which is slated for completion in 2025.
