What

Ongoing construction and traffic restrictions along Stadium Way, N. 2nd St., Division Avenue, Martin Luther King Jr. Way and the Dome District

When

Week of November 14. Work will take place day and night.

Where

Entire project area:

  • Day and night track testing, electrical testing, installation of lighting, cutting of decorative sidewalks and overhead wiring work for the future light rail system will take place at various locations along the route during the week (Commerce St., Stadium Way, N. 1st St. , Division Ave., and MLK Jr. Way). During this construction activity, the contractor has been granted a nighttime noise gap and will need to temporarily remove parking and relocate traffic to maintain a safe work area.
  • The contractor secured a noise gap to begin at 8:00 a.m. weekends at Old City Hall Station, NE 4th Station, Stadium District Station, and Tacoma General Station to complete the installation of the handrails at the stations.
  • Directional street closures will occur between MLK, N 1st, Stadium and Division at select station locations for the installation of gutters and downspouts. Parking will need to be removed from the area during these closures.
  • The Tacoma Link is now back in service! The T Line train will temporarily run at 7th and Commerce until we begin testing later this year. Please ensure you stay within the parking lanes so as not to impede access by T Link vehicles.
  • The grinding of the rails must now be completed by November 16. This work will take place at night and will involve a slow operation along the route. Impacts include traffic control in crushing areas, sparks from machinery and noise from operations. There will be no parking signs along the corridor for this construction impact. Click here for more information.
  • Final layout of roads and parking lanes in various areas will be delayed due to fall and winter weather conditions. Crews will plan when weather permits.
North West Dance Theater

Dome district:

  • Westbound E. 25th St. between G and K streets is now open. The tracing will take place from Saturday November 12 and will require temporary traffic control. This work is weather dependent. Work will be scheduled at a later date to repair the concrete panels in the area.
  • East 26th St. from G St. to D St. closure for public works. This work should be completed by November 23. Streets F through D will be open to local access for businesses.

Trade/Lane Stadium:

  • The S. 7th St. and Commerce St. intersection is open to traffic in both directions. Light rail operators will use the intersection to turn switch tracks. This will be in place until pre-income testing later this year. A traffic flagman will be present during this period. The T line terminus location in the interim will be Commerce St. station at 11th St. and Commerce.

Stadium area (N. E St., N 1st St., Division Ave.):

  • Work at the intersection, corner, and crosswalk at N. Tacoma Avenue and N. 1st St. began Oct. 17. As this work progresses, crosswalks will need to be closed to restore the sidewalk, ramps and utilities. Vehicle access and sidewalks will be maintained. Access to businesses will be maintained, but there will be sidewalk closures in various areas. Please follow traffic control signs for detours. Parking should also be removed near work areas. Some work will require lane closures to N. Tacoma Avenue and N. 1st St. This work will take place seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., until mid-November. Closures have moved to the south corners of N. Tacoma Avenue and N. 1st St. This work is expected to be complete by mid-November. This work will also need to close just south of the N. 1st St. intersection. Parking will need to be removed from the area and diversions will be in place during this work.
  • Southbound Stadium Way between 705 and Broadway will be fully closed as of Nov. 15 for tree trimming and other work. There will be a change on Northbound Stadium Way where the I-705 intersection will lead to Division Ave. This work should be completed by the end of November. Once this work is completed, the cycle path will be reopened. This work is pending the opening of Tacoma Avenue to traffic in both directions.
  • The south leg of Tacoma Ave will be closed until November 14.
  • The complete closure of North J St. to Division Avenue is scheduled to open as early as November 11. 2nd St will remain open.
  • 2nd Street at Division Avenue will be fully closed for pavement restoration starting November 11 and will last until mid-November. J Street will remain open.
  • The complete closure of I Street northbound to 2nd Street will last until the end of November. Traffic may turn south on I St. from east on N 2nd St.
  • Westbound N 1st St. Bike Lane will close and a lane change on Yakima will take place as early as November 23 for arched sidewalk repairs and is expected to open in mid-November. This job received a noise deviation to work seven days a week, starting at 7 a.m.
Tacoma Community College

Hilltop Road/MLK Jr:

  • Northbound MLK from Division Avenue to 3rd Street is closed for restoration. This work will continue until mid-November.
  • The city and Sound Transit walked around the project area and found “checklist” work that will require directional closures from MLK to complete the repairs. The contractor planned the work in sections from 6th to 9th, 9th to 12th and 15th to 19th in each direction. Each section will take approximately four days to complete. Signage will be posted to indicate the closed areas with the dates. Work will include repairing track slabs, sidewalks and other types of concrete.
  • Upcoming street closures:
    • Crews will work on MLK Jr. Way and Earnest S. Brazill St. to install drainage along the future light rail track. This work will require a complete closure of the intersection for approximately six days.
