By Aaron Humes: Belize Ports Authority Commissioner Major Gilbert Swazo told Breaking Belize News this afternoon that the owner of a landing craft operating in Placencia Lagoon has received a notice not to sail until to fix a mechanical problem that caused the pollution of the important waterway.

This week, residents of the peninsula shared images and videos of the substance, described by Major Swazo as “black soot” washed into the lagoon, although the problem dates back to March. Following another complaint, the Authority carried out an inspection and issued the notice, Major Swazo confirmed this afternoon.

The Harbors Commissioner could not say when was the last time the barge, owned by AK Aggregate and Concrete Supplies Limited, was inspected, but noted that the barge is licensed to operate and the Authority is checking airworthiness as part of its annual review. The problem appears to have developed since the last such inspection.

AK Aggregate owner Albert Loewen, a leading contractor and hardware store owner in the Maya Beach area of the peninsula, contacted this afternoon for comment by phone, said the situation would be resolved but wouldn’t say much about how it happened. and how he intended to fix it. He initially denied that oil or any similar substance had been spilled from the barge and that the Port Authority inspection found no such substance.

We are also seeking comments from the Department of the Environment (DOE). Both the port and the DOE are investigating the matter, although the port is in the lead as it handles all incidents involving maritime activity.
