Large defense contract to aid Space Command missions

COLORADO SPRINGS — Although NASA’s Artemis I launch is postponed, August 29 brings a breakthrough victory for a southern Colorado space defense contractor.

Based in Colorado Springs Delta Solutions & Strategies wins what appears to be the biggest local defense contract this year to participate in US Space Command missions.

The 5-year, $187 million contract means the company will add 150 employees.

“This is a game-changer for the business,” said Mark Stafford, president and CEO of Delta Solutions & Strategies. “That puts us in a whole different business category for the domestic space community.”

Delta Solutions & Strategies started 22 years ago. It’s a small, veteran-owned company, and the contract makes it the prime contractor for US Space Command. Delta Solutions & Strategies identified the contract as a priority target after the government announced it two years ago.

“We will be doing IT and computing support planning, exercise support and current operations support for the space,” Stafford said.

Delta Solutions & Strategies specializes in the modeling and simulation of space environments. With the agreement comes nearly double the number of current employees and the growth of the headquarters in Colorado Springs by 10,000 square feet of office space.

“In addition to the people we’re putting on the contract, we’ll be hiring five to 10 general employees in the next 60 days,” Stafford said. “Recruitment, social services and finance positions.

The contract comes to Colorado Springs amid decisions to move US Space Command’s headquarters. Mayor John Suthers continues to fight the proposed move to Huntsville, Alabama.

“We don’t want a reasonable location for Space Command, we want the best location for Space Command,” Mayor Suthers said in May this year.

Congressman Doug Lamborn won’t let up either.

“The only conclusion you can come to is that Space Command should be here in Colorado, in Colorado Springs specifically,” said Congressman Lamborn of Colorado’s 5th congressional district.

Delta Solutions & Strategies has a second hub located in Huntsville and says it is ready for a possible move.

“Wherever US Space Command ends up, you know where the government decides to go, we’re ready to support it anyway,” Stafford said.
