Downtown renovation contractor announced

The construction partner for the first phase of the Abbey Street development in downtown Nuneaton has been revealed.

BAM Construct UK, part of the Royal BAM group, was recently appointed to create the Nuneaton and Bedworth Physical Activity Center in Miners’ Welfare Park, Bedworth.

He also began work on creating a 145-room Hampton by Hilton hotel in Nuneaton.

BAM has already completed the initial fencing, ground investigations and remediation work. The company is the contractor behind the redevelopment of Birmingham’s Paradise Circus, where it has created some £250million of new buildings within a half-mile radius.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is the developer of the new program, along with development partner Queensberry. The project will see the completion of rehabilitation works, the preparation of new leisure facilities and public spaces, as well as the construction of the first hotel in the city centre.

BAM’s appointment secures the next stages of the project following land and property acquisition, demolition and some enabling works that have already been completed.

Work on the first phase was funded by a grant from the Future High Streets Fund as part of the government’s plan to renew and reshape town centres.

The second phase of the Abbey Street project will include new buildings for leisure operators, a food hall, a town center campus for North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College and a multi-storey car park.

Cllr Kris Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, said: ‘This is a critical step in the work we need to do to improve Nuneaton town centre, and we are pleased to confirm that Bam will be people to work with us on this.

“They have an impressive track record and their contribution to breathing new life into Nuneaton is going to make a fantastic difference to the town.

“Abbey Street has always been a crucial part of our town that makes Nuneaton so distinctive. This work will literally cement its place as the refreshed heart of this city. The town center will benefit from a new future where leisure, catering and visitor reception will rub shoulders with the town center market and shops.

David Ellis, Regional Manager for BAM Construction Midlands, said: “This will be a significant and multi-faceted development. This will positively impact so many local people and businesses throughout the region. We will work with sensitivity and respect with those around us while making this major improvement to Nuneaton’s built environment.

“What BAM brings is our exceptional experience in place-making developments, along with industry-leading technology and sustainability capabilities. Above all, we are a highly collaborative team and will work in working closely with our partners and we really look forward to bringing positive change to Nuneaton.
