Charah Solutions Receives Southern Company Triangle Safety Award for Outstanding Safety Performance


LOUISVILLE, KY / ACCESSWIRE / January 11, 2022 / Chara® Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: CHRA) (the “Company”), a leading provider of essential environmental services and by-product sales to the power generation industry, received the Triangle Safety Award Award from Southern Company Technical & Project Solutions (T&PS) for outstanding performance for work performed within the Southern Company system in 2020.

The coveted Triangle Safety Award is presented annually to recognize selected contractors whose safety performance on Southern Company (NYSE: SO) projects meets exceptionally high standards, including:

  • Reached the first quartile for the safety observation rate thanks to the participation of all (STEP) among the subcontractors of the company of the South AND maintained a minimum STEP observation rate of 5 observations per 1000 working hours every month throughout the year for all work, including subcontracted work.

  • Maintain 100% participation in project visits and / or site assessments.

  • Have no safety related corrective action items open and reached the first quartile for timeliness of corrective action execution.

  • Have no open safety non-compliance report (SNCR) and have reached the first quartile of subcontractors with the fewest SNCRs issued.

  • Did not cause failure or damage to Southern Company property valued at more than $ 10,000.

  • The contractor’s total number of working hours must exceed a minimum number in order to qualify for the award.

Charah Solutions is an industry leader in safety excellence with a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 0.36 in 2020 with no wasted time or time-limited injuries and an impressive rate average modification of experience (EMR) over three years of less than 0.7.

In 2020, Charah Solutions completed work at four different Southern Company sites. One of the larger projects included a proposed closure of an approximately 100-acre surface reservoir. The multi-year scope of work includes the installation of a new rail as well as improvements to the existing rail infrastructure and the construction of a large concrete loading bay.

Additionally, over the next several years, as the ponds closed, approximately 2 million tonnes of site ash is expected to be beneficially used in the production of Portland cement. In addition to improving the quality of the finished concrete product, the use of fly ash in concrete products eliminates the need to dispose of fly ash in landfills. In 2020, Charah Solutions recovered and recycled 2.58 million tonnes of coal combustion residues (CCR), saving more than 2.24 million tonnes of CO2 to enter the atmosphere.
